Child Protection Conference Chair/Independent Reviewing Officer

  • Minimum of 5 years post-qualifying experience in social work with children and families.
  • Experience of chairing meetings involving children and families.
  • Sufficient relevant social work experience in children's social care to undertake role
  • To chair child protection case conferences, strategy meetings and statutory reviews of children looked after by the local authority.
  • To ensure that all Looked After Children Reviews and Child Protection meetings are held within timescales.
  • In carrying out this independent chairing role, to check that appropriate child protection and/or care plans written plans exist for each child, and that statutory requirements and department policy and procedures are adhered. And that the decision making is informed by an understanding of child development, parenting capacity, family and environmental factors and a full appreciation of the risk and protective factors within a child protection framework
  • Promote participation and involvement in decision making by children and young people
  • To take appropriate follow-up action with responsible managers, staff and senior managers to ensure plans are developed and implemented.
  • To retain a key role in providing an overview to senior managers of practice and standards of care, and in the development of high standards of practice.
  • To make final decisions on the process for individual case conferences and reviews, including the structure, timing, attendance and provision of "confidential slots" within the overall parameters set by procedures and the Safeguarding Manager.
  • To give guidance to participants on the purpose and process of conferences and reviews to ensure that the process of meetings promotes the effective participation of children, parents and professionals.
  • To liaise with other agencies in coordinating their involvement in the planning and review process, and in the provision of services by them for looked after children.
  • To ensure maintenance of confidentiality in accordance with policy, procedures and regulations.
